If you're digging in the desert, use a diagonal shaft rather than a straight drop. The sandstone has lower stability than the rock in Zone 1, and 'cave-ins' are a real mechanic. Use vertical support beams every 5 blocks!

Step 1: Get beams. Step 2: Dig 4 blocks. Step 3: Place beam. If you see dust falling from the ceiling, back away immediately.

Learned the hard way about cave-ins. Lost a full inventory of copper because I didn't support the roof. Be careful out there!
